MPSC
to Begin Outcomes Study
at UVA NICU for HeRO™
Heart Rate Observation System
Study will test
for an improvement in clinical outcomes through the early identification
of sepsis
October
1, 2003 – Charlottesville, VA:
Medical Predictive Science Corporation (MPSC) has announced that it will
begin a clinical trial this month in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
at the University of Virginia Health Center to collect
outcomes data for its FDA cleared HeRO™ (Heart
Rate Observation) system.
HeRO
is a non-invasive bio-informatic system that detects abnormal heart rate
characteristics, such as reduced baseline variability and transient
decelerations, in premature infants. HeRO continuously acquires,
measures and evaluates heart rate data from existing ECG systems. The
study will test the hypothesis that the HeRO system will lead to
improved clinical outcomes within the study population,
including reduced length of stay and reduced time on mechanical
ventilation.
Late
onset sepsis, an infection of the blood requiring hospitalization,
strikes over 40,000 children in the US each year.
On an annual basis the care and treatment of these children is
close to $2 Billion. Of the total number of cases, 17% occur in babies
under a month old with birth weights less than 1500 grams (approximately
3.5 lbs). These babies, known as very low birth weight (VLBW) babies
annually consume over 30% of the hospitalization costs for sepsis and
40% of the number of available beds days.
The
HeRO system may materially change these statistics by
providing information to the clinician not currently available that will
aid in the early detection of sepsis and sepsis like illnesses.
HeRO is the first of what will be a series of patented products
licensed to MPSC by the University of Virginia Patent Foundation that
are non-invasive, continuous and can successfully detect patterns in
physiological data 12 to 24 hours before any clinical symptoms exist.
