New HeRO™ Data Acquisition Device Receives Medical Safety Approval

June 1, 2006 - Charlottesville, VA: Medical Predictive Science Corporation (MPSC) announced that their AD2 Data Acquisition Device has received UL-2601-1 Medical Safety approval for use in patient care areas of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The testing was performed by TUV Rheinland of Raleigh, North Carolina.

The AD2 is part of MPSC's Heart Rate Observation System (HeRO™) product family. HeRO™ is a noninvasive real-time monitoring system used in the NICU to analyze heart rate patterns for the purposes of identifying transient decelerations and reduced baseline variability.

The new device will be used to gather waveform data from the ECG monitors in the NICU. It will digitize the signal, identify individual heartbeats, and transmit this information over a computer network to a larger computer for further analysis.

"The AD2 will significantly lower the installation cost for future HeRO™ sites", said Scott Booth, senior engineer at MPSC and the lead developer of the AD2 hardware and firmware. "Previously we were using off the shelf PCs with third-party data acquisition cards installed. Often times the cards cost more than the computers they were going into."

MPSC will leverage these cost savings to add more sites to an ongoing NIH-sponsored multicenter randomized clinical trial, which tests the idea that the HeRO™ monitoring system improves outcomes of very low birth weight patients in the NICU.

"Our top priority at this point is to increase the rate at which we collect data for the NIH Outcomes Study. The AD2 will allow us to do that cost effectively. This is a major step forward for this technology," said MPSC CEO Will King.
