New HeRO™ Data Acquisition Device Receives FDA Clearance June 27, 2008 - Charlottesville, VA: Medical Predictive Science Corporation (MPSC) announced that their AD2 Data Acquisition Device has received 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This advanced device simplifies the HeRO™ installation and improves the reliability and appearance of the installed system in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The AD2 is a component of MPSC's Heart Rate Observation System (HeRO™). HeRO is a noninvasive real-time monitoring system used in the NICU to analyze heart rate patterns for the purposes of identifying transient decelerations and reduced baseline variability. The AD2 device is used to gather waveform data from virtually any ECG monitor already present in the NICU. This device digitizes the ECG signal output from the monitor, identifies individual heartbeats, and transmits this information over a standard computer network to the HeRO™ server for further analysis and presentation to the health care staff. "The use of the AD2 significantly increases the reliability and uptime of the HeRO™ system at customer sites while also easing installation", said Scott Booth, Director of Engineering at MPSC and the lead developer of the AD2 hardware and firmware. "Previously, we were using off the shelf PCs with third-party data acquisition cards installed. In the environment of an intensive care unit, these systems experienced high failure rates, especially of the moving parts in the fans and hard drives, due to the continuous operation." The AD2 units are being deployed at all new installations, including those participating in the ongoing NIH-sponsored multicenter randomized clinical trial, which tests the idea that the HeRO™ monitoring system improves outcomes of very low birth weight patients in the NICU. "The HeRO™ system is now being used to monitor over 850 beds in the USA. This new version of the product was developed as a part of our continuous product improvement process and will decrease our costs while increasing uptime for HeRO™ users," said MPSC CEO Will King. #
