European Patent Office Grants Patent on HeRO™ Technology July 7, 2008 - Charlottesville, VA: Medical Predictive Science Corporation (MPSC) announced that it will advance the HeRO™ system to market in Europe as a result of the European Patent Office giving notice of patent acceptance for technology used in the HeRO™ system. This patent extends the reach of the intellectual property protection already granted on this technology in the United States. Founded in 2002, MPSC has developed the Heart Rate Observation System, HeRO™. HeRO™ utilizes Heart Rate Characteristics technologies invented at the University of Virginia and licensed exclusively to MPSC from the University of Virginia Patent Foundation. “We at the U.Va. Patent Foundation are pleased that MPSC’s HeRO™ technology, developed at U.Va., has gained protection throughout Europe,” says Robert S. MacWright, J.D., PhD., Executive Director of the U.Va. Patent Foundation. “It’s wonderful to see a U.Va. invention making its way toward the world market.” HeRO™ is a noninvasive real-time monitoring system used in the NICU to analyze heart rate patterns for the purposes of identifying transient decelerations and reduced baseline variability. Using HeRO™, the U.S. National Institutes of Health is sponsoring a clinical trial to evaluate the improvements HeRO™ confers in patient outcomes for these most-precious infants. The HeRO™ System is currently installed on nearly 900 NICU beds in the U.S.A.
